In our business today, sow resumes are built on significant wins and dollars generated; maternal traits, no matter the measure, are clearly an afterthought. When a sow proves the ability to do all three, it feels like a north star. We found ours and her notch is 146-6, the mother of our newest go-to boar on The Hill.
The next litter after something significant doesn’t often live up to expectations. In fact, it rarely exceeds them, yet that was the case here. Run it Back was a standout from the deepest litter of pigs in our summer crop – the Kong-sired 210’s. 12 born, 11 notched and 11 offered in our July Online Sale for a $4327 average. Our sale actually happened a couple weeks before Karlie Kennedy’s barrow was slapped as the Grand Overall Barrow at the Ohio State Fair – also out of 146-6. Fun fact, the other 146 litter gilt was Grand Cross Gilt at the ’23 Ohio State Fair.

Run It Back’s mate brother was 2nd in class to the Reserve Grand at Denver this past week and ended up 5th Overall in Div III of the crosses. He was a stouty at sale time and certainly never lost that advantage. We were proud to stand in the backdrop and sincerely appreciate all of the compliments on that barrow. Seeing him in person only substantiated our commitment to staying the course and giving Run it Back a big chance.
Beyond this particular sow, it’s worth noting here that sows with Dash 8 and JoJo in their pedigree have proven to be incredibly potent. Several of our very best over the last couple of years all share that in common – boars, barrows and gilts alike. At a time when genetic diversity seems to be spiraling down a narrow funnel, we believe the bottom side of Run It Back’s pedigree is an advantage.
